A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Cartoon Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Love Story

In this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and placing gold under their pillows. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous gnome he expected.

An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for children). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, given to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, smelly, and backward, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.

Naturally, such a setup needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t all that many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not mature enough for the content teenagers view these days instead of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
